Tucked away in the West Campus of Texas A&M is a 27-acre plot of land that is home to The Gardens at Texas A&M University. Faculty and staff use The Gardens to teach valuable concepts about the natural environment, landscape beauty and food production to the public, but you can also visit to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life for a while. Located just minutes from our apartments in College Station, TX, it’s a must-see!
TAMU HORTICULTURE GARDENS
The Texas A&M University horticulture gardens are home to over 2,500 specimens in 30 different planting areas and beds. This variety allows for the study of adaptability of plant materials to central Texas growing conditions. Habitats range from the southwest desert to wetlands and bogs. With seating every 100 feet and an eighth of a mile of winding walking paths, you can spend hours soaking up the sun and enjoying the flora.
The Leach Teaching Gardens is the first construction phase of The Gardens. Ground was broken in June 2016 and they opened June 15, 2018. They are named for Amy and Tim Leach, the lead donors of this project. These gardens include a fruit orchard, a vegetable garden and a butterfly and bee garden. Both the bees and butterflies are crucial for pollinating the gardens, and if you wear brightly colored clothing and sit still, you may attract butterflies to come land on you.
GERMAN AND CZECH HERITAGE GARDENS
The Marjorie Ann Klaevemann Memorial German heritage garden is quaint and charming. With well-placed fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants, the vegetation is truly eye-catching. The Czech heritage garden shows Czech-influenced landscaping elements that are common throughout Texas. Flowers, vegetable plants, grapes and fruit trees are featured in this garden. It was given by Quad-Tex in honor of George and Susan Chmelar.
